The Dummies’ Guide to Buying a Diamond
Jewelry holds a special place in my heart. Not so much for the value of the jewelry itself but for the memories associated with it. The first time I encountered the concept of buying diamonds for a partner was in a whiskey commercial. A 30-year-old man forgot his wedding anniversary and now wants to express his love (and save his life) by giving his beloved a precious stone – a sparkling natural diamond. The second time I discovered the concept of buying natural diamonds was last week.
After I decided to pop the question, buying the engagement ring was considered just one more item on the Thursday to-do list, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. One must do meticulous research before purchasing a sparkling natural diamond. You’ll discover many new terms and a hundred different styles, but it’s not that intimidating because…
You don’t need to know everything about diamonds to buy the right one, but you do need to know everything about your partner to choose the right one.
So I’m preparing a diamond buying guide (read as a service to humanity) that I wish someone had given me when I wanted to buy a diamond engagement ring.
1) Umm, can we talk about price first?
There is no right or wrong budget when choosing the perfect ring.
Love is priceless, but at the same time you need to take into account all the information you know about the gemstone. From shape to carat, color and metal, everything plays an important role in planning the perfect proposal. Now, before you start planning an elaborate diamond heist, know that there are a wide variety of diamonds to suit different budgets; from the famous two-month salary rule to the closure of a Tiffany store so that she can choose her own ring, you will be spoiled for choice.
From diamond solitaires to stacked natural diamond bracelets, there are a range of designs at different price points. It’s all about finding the one that suits your wallet and the style you have in mind, which is slightly easier than planning a heist. Steal her heart, not the ring, right…? That’s it !
2)Use the 4Cs to help you make the right decision!
The value of a natural diamond is determined by its size, carat, color and clarity. Cut relates to the diamond’s ability to reflect light. It is of capital importance in the classification of the diamond. A carat isn’t something you’ll find in the bottom compartment of your refrigerator, but it is the weight of the diamond. Color plays an important role in diamond grading and colorless diamonds are considered to be of the highest quality. As for clarity, it represents the purity of the natural diamond and focuses on its internal characteristics. So, are you still wondering why the 4Cs are important?
3) Certification is proof that you are purchasing a natural diamond.
According to diamond jewelry experts, and now me, there is a 5th C which means “certification”. This means that independent labs (the GIA and the American Gem Society are the real gems here) give you a grading report for your diamond. Obtaining this report is one way to ensure that you are actually getting what you are paying for.
4) It’s time to make things official
Now, to choose the style of your natural diamond ring, you need to scroll through your chats, your Facebook memories, and also your shopping history to start looking for clues. At times like these, you have to ask yourself: what was their favorite celebrity’s outfit at the Oscars, or what was their favorite celebrity’s wedding and what wedding ring did they buy for their spouse?
Don’t forget that this ring, symbol of your love, will be displayed on all occasions, and that it must therefore perfectly match your fiancée’s style. A custom-made and personalized diamond engagement ring would be perfect if she favors unique items above all else. On the other hand, if nostalgia and retro are herthing, a vintage diamond ring is the ideal solution.
The carats, the size, the purity and the mystery, which were just words to you yesterday, but have a lot of meaning today. Just like the million dollar question “Will you marry me?” which is best received with a billion-year-old ethical natural diamond in the hand and billions of emotions in the mind.
